I have a little over 4000 miles on my TEC3r and had good communications between the ECU and the laptop, but not now. I haven't had the laptop hooked up to it for a couple of weeks but wanted to tweak it a little. Changed what I wanted (AFR) and uploaded it to the ECU with no problem, fired up the engine and can't do anything onfly in either the Monitor Engine or Calibration mode. It will communicate in both but then goes into the no connection mode. Same laptop so I figured something may be in conflict, so formated it and loaded everything fresh. Still the same problem and used a fresh download of TEC3r ver 3.5.6 which I was using before. Using a Belkin USB to serial adapter so used an off brand one I had but still same problem, bought a new one from Radio Shack and still same problem, used different USB outlets on the laptop with no difference, tried COM 1, 2 and 4 but still the same. Using firmware WT305T3/R. The engine runs good, starts good, no missing nor any engine code light on the ECU nor the engine trouble light on the dash. I have the Fuel & Timing trim potentiometers and they are working good also. I'm using resistor spark plugs and Taylor wires that the manual says works okay. The crank sensor is set at .020" gap between the sensor (1/2") and the toothed wheel (6"). Checked grounds, I'm using welding cable for the battery and grounds (to starter, to frame and to body) dedicated ECU ground mounted with brass bolt and washers, tried temp grounds and unlatched the ECU and moved it over some to see if that would help but it didn't. Good voltage and alternator putting out almost 14volt, tried the laptop hooked to 110v and also 12v converter to 110v and using charger, still have the problem. Am I missing something?

thanks
Vergil

("Has your laptop recently upgraded to service pack 3")

Yes it has Card Counter, before I formatted and after I reloaded everything. I didn't try it before uodating Win XP.

Well I removed Windows sp3 and everything worked great again (thanks Card Counter). I reinstalled all of the Windows XP critical updates a few at a time in case it messed up the communications between the laptop and the ECU, all loaded and still no problems. I went into system restore and made a restore point called "TEC3r Working Good" so I have a place to come back to. Until I hear there is no longed a problem with sp3 I will just update manually.

Thanks Again Card Counter

Has to do with the version of the usbser.sys driver in SP3. Some people have used the previous version from SP2 to make it work. If you have access to a SP2 system, you can copy the usbser.sys file, or if you upgraded to SP3 from SP2, you should still have the driver cache from SP2.

1) Make a backup of current driver C:\windows\system32\drivers\usbser.sys
2a) Copy over the SP2 version of the file to C:\windows\system32\drivers\ (overwrite existing file)
********* OR *********
2b) Open C:\windows\driver cache\i386\sp2.cab in WinRar or Winzip and extract ONLY usbser.sys to C:\windows\system32\drivers\ (overwrite existing file)
3) Reboot

If this doesn't work, uninstall SP3.

Well I looked in the Windows/system32/drivers for usbser.sys and didn't find one (using XP sp2) so downloaded sp2 and extracted the usbser.sys file to use after updating to sp3. Loaded sp3 for Windows XP and tried it but went into the no connection mode again. Looked in the drivers again for usbser.sys file but still wasn't one there, copied the one from sp2 into the driver folder and tried again, still didn't work so removed sp3 and okay now. Was worth trying to see if it would connect for me.
