I bought a small dc to ac convertor that plugs in to the cig lighter.
Only because my lap top battery sucks.

Your laptop will connect fine when running on battery. The only time we ask that you plug in your laptop is during a firmware upgrade. That because we don't want your battery to die in the middle of the process. This was a bigger deal with the TEC3's which couldn't recover from a failed upgrade without coming back to us.

With the TECgt, XDI-2 and all future products, the systems can be recovered in the field quite easily, so it's not really a big deal.

If your battery lasts long enough to do what you need, don't feel you need to be plugged in all the time.
