Tried to post this before but didn't see it show up. So I'll try again.
Just bought an 86 Mustang with a Tec2 system. Where is the best place to start trying to bone up on it? What about the software, do I need a computer with Windows 98 or will a later version, like XP work?
Thanks,
Al in Tucson

The first thing would be to see what aoftware it needs. You can find out by looking at the side of unit to see what is etched in the side. If the unit was upgraded here, it will be updated. That is the easy way. But it's still possible the unit was upgraded by the customer and the etching was not updated. So the most accurate way would be to split the case and look at the EPROM inside. It is the only visible chip and the label on it will tell you the firmware version you have. Post that here and I can tell you what software you will need.
The produt manual is available here.
We run all of the software (both DOS and Windows versions) in Windows XP without trouble, so you shouldn't have a problem there. That said, TECII's do have a lot of problems with USB to Serial Adapters. So if you don't have a native serial port or a PCMCIA adapter, you're going to have trouble talking to the system. USB to Serial adapter that use the FTDI chip have been reported to work (with all of our systems including TEC2's) and they're not hard find. Just search for FTDI and you'll come up with some places that sell them. They generally run about $20-$30. _________________ Jon

Jon,
There is a CD with the car labeled WinTech 2. I'll see if my old laptop will still fire up. It has a real 9 pin RS232 port.
Thanks,
Al

WinTEC2 it is. You shouldn't need to download anything from our website. The only other thing you'll need is a copy of the BIN file that is on the unit. If you can't find it with the things you got with the car, you'll want to contact the previous owner and get from them or find out what they did with it. Especially if the car is running very well. _________________ Jon
