I just got an old-school TEC-II from a 5.0 Mustang guy. I think this is going to be a great starter system for me. The user's manual is from 1996 and doesn't include any tips for installation on the then-new Cobra 4.6, but a lot of info on Mazda rotary and Dodge 4 cylinders.
I got an Accufab 4.6- to- Electromotive trigger wheel to replace the factory trigger. However, I am wondering if the factory pickup magnet is too wide, as the pickup I got with the 5.0 parts is shaped to a v-shape tip. That is also in the user manual as being important.
Also, would it be best for me to buy the chip to use the WINTECH program?
Any other TEC-II basic help or lessons-learned would be greatly appreciated, as I am new to the site, but have been a carb and points distributor guy since the late 1970's.

i'd like to start off and say hello,
sounds like you are very new to EFI, along with Electromotive, please correct me if im wrong. yes, the TEC 2 will be a great system for you, provided you become familiar with it before you begin any kind of install. a basic run down, dont worry about the Mazda rotary or dodge 4 cyl. bla bla bla, these are designed for many different engines, next, there arn't many vehicle specific install plans, but dont let this bother you because no matter what kind of engine you are running with the TEC2, (for the most part) you will be using the same GM sensors and 60 -2 tooth MPU sprocket, forget about the ford DIS mag. pickup and just hook up with an electromotive dealer and buy the very affordable mag. sensor designed for the TEC2.
last but not least, what do you mean by "buy the chip" to use wintec? what chip? either way, you need wintec, and on the TEC2 you are limited to the wintec2 which can be downloaded for free from the EMI website, hope this helps _________________ 97' Saturn SC2-Turbo

Thanks for the help. I am pretty new to EFI, since I like to see things happen (turn distributor and timing changes, turn an idle screw and idie changes, etc). Mainly, I tend to have trouble thinking like an electron.
This is a link to what I called a chip, but I guess it's called an e-prom?

Are you saying that I don't need this? I don't have a problem buying it if it makes my system work better for me.
Thanks
Depending on when this TEC2 was built, you may already have the Wintec2 chip (PROM).
There were several iterations of TEC2 firmware - if you want to use a Windows (i.e., not DOS-based) interface then you need to have either a PAF-Blend, Wintec v1 or Wintec v2 PROM.
WinTec v1 software can still be downloaded from the eMotive website if you know where to look, and only works with a PAF-Blend or Wintec v1 PROM.
Wintec2 was the latest rev of software and requires a Wintec v2 PROM.
If you don't have the TEC2 installed yet, then the easiest way to tell which chip you have would be to take the unit apart and see what the label reads on the PROM - it will be the only removable chip on the circuit board as I recall. _________________

I carefully pulled the back half off and the prom has a hand-written PAFZP1Q2 and under that it reads 031396, also handwritten.
That matches the engraving on the plate's edge that says 203169-34T21HQ-8cyl PAFZP1Q2. Now, the 34T21HQ looks like someone tried to scribble it off, but it's still readable.
I just realized that I needed the e-prom I showed in my last post in order to run Wintech2, so I ordered it form Crespo Cams in that auction.
Does this e-prom just carefully pry out of its spot? Any tips for a first timer?

Yes it should just pry out. Before you remove it, notice that one end of the PROM will have a notch or dot on it, which signifies where pin "1" is. Make a note of this orientation and make SURE that you install the new PROM in the same orientation. When you install the PROM in the socket, place all of the pins on one side in the socket first, then you can easily get the other side to line up properly. Trying to put both sides of the PROM in the socket at once usually results in bent pins and headaches. _________________
